1 - Tools
• Hand brace*
• Ships auger at least 14" long**
• 1/2" dowel for sanding the bore
• Treadle lathe and cutting tools (you could use a regular, powered wood lathe)
• Sandpaper, 100/150/220/320 grits
• 15" ruler or yard stick
• Hand drill with 5/16", 9/32" and 1/4" drill bits (see text)
• 1/4" rat tail rasp
• Workbench or sturdy table and a couple of clamps
• Hatchet and/or draw-knife
• Spokeshave
* Older braces have only two jaw pieces so you may need to grind the end of the auger bit
a little to get the brace to hold it well.
** An on-line search for "11/16 ship auger" found them priced from $15 - $42; Amazon $20,
Home Depot $20. If sharpened well I suspect that any of them would do the job we're asking
of it.
